Overview

Coming Soon Early 2025

Current Clarity analysts with access to UCSF’s electronic medical records must now enroll in UCSF’s Federated Research Data Steward Program (FReDS) to extract clinical data for scientific research to support researchers within their own groups.

Offerings

What is FReDS?

Academic Research Services extends access to data for scientific research beyond ARS’ centralized Clinical Data Research Consultation through the Federated Research Data Steward Program (FReDS). The UCSF FReDS program is a structured and compliant program aimed at guiding analysts in extracting, delivering, and sharing UCSF data. This program provides training, support, and oversight while ensuring compliance with UCSF and regulatory standards. The FReDS program broadens ARS' pool of existing Clinical Data Research Consultants by enabling analysts with access to UCSF's Clarity data to provide clinical data to scientific researchers in their departments or groups.

Become a Federated Research Data Steward

If you already have access to UCSF’s electronic medical record data and wish to provide data for research to staff or faculty within your department or group, you now have an opportunity to do so in a compliant and structured manner by joining the FReDS program!

For more information, please visit the FReDS Program Home Page (VPN required).

Please note: As of 09/30/2025, if you access UCSF’s electronic medical record databases directly and extract data for the purpose of scientific research, and are not enrolled in the FReDS program, you are out of compliance with UCSF policy.
